Star NFL running back Deuce McAllister spoke to a room full of Florida Citrus Sports members and guests, as well as jersey-sporting Ole Miss Rebels and New Orleans Saints fans, on Tuesday as part of the Florida Citrus Sports Speaker Series. The luncheon, the last of the 2006-07 FCSports year, was held in the Varsity Club at the Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium.
Hosted by WFTV Channel 9 sports anchor Jenny Dunn, the program covered a variety of topics in the player’s career, from his early days of visiting prospective colleges to his memories of being drafted by the Saints to helping rebuild the city of New Orleans and the entire Gulf Coast region after it was devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
In his six seasons, McAllister has rushed for 5,586 yards and 44 touchdowns while posting 1,577 receiving yards including four 1,000-plus yard efforts in his last five seasons. Drafted out of Ole Miss in 2001, his career began in controversy because the team already had Ricky Williams on the roster, but he soon quieted the critics with a 1,388-yard campaign in his sophomore season of 2002. Now sharing the backfield with 2005 Heisman Trophy recipient Reggie Bush, McAllister has remained at the top of his game and the Saints depth chart.
In addition to his success on the field, McAllister has also been instrumental in helping his adopted community of New Orleans and other areas affected by the hurricane. His Catch 22 Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the lives of under-privileged youth and adolescents in the Gulf South Region primarily through the establishment of positive role models in their lives, providing unique opportunities for them to experience, and a financial commitment to making a difference. As a show of appreciation for his appearance at the luncheon, FCSports donated $1,000 to the Catch 22 Foundation.
