Michigan State leads series 28-21 (Last meeting: Oct. 2, 2010 Michigan State 34, Wisconsin 24)

ESPN College Gameday heads to East Lansing for a matchup betweent No. 4 Wisconsin (6-0, 2-0 Big Ten) and No. 15 Michigan State (5-1, 2-0 Big Ten). The Badgers will meet a rowdy Spartan crowd for their first away game. Big Ten title hopes begin to set in with this weekend’s game as the two teams are leading their respective divisions.

Wisconsin comes off a lopsided 59-7 victory against Indiana. Through six games, the team has averaged 50.2 points per game and has only allowed their opponents an average of 9.7 points. The Badgers currently lead the conference in total offense averaging 523.2 yards per game, led by Montee Ball’s aggressive rushing attack this season. The Big Ten Player of the Week had 142 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries against the Hoosiers, and also threw a touchdown pass to Heisman hopeful Russell Wilson. He has scored at least one touchdown in the last 12 games, totaling 32 touchdowns. Ball ranks second in the conference behind Michigan’s Denard Robinson, averaging 108.8 yards per game.

With homecoming and College Gameday excitement and big wins under their belts, the Spartans enter the week with high motivation. For the fourth consecutive year, Michigan State has a win against in-state rival Michigan. Senior Kirk Cousins is the first quarterback to win three straight games over the Wolverines. This season marks the first time since 1999 (when they were coached by Nick Saban) the Spartans have defeated both Ohio State and Michigan in the same season. The Spartans lead the conference in total defense, allowing only 186.2 yards per game. Through four home games, Michigan State has only allowed an average of 6.8 points.

Extra point: Wisconsin only lost two games in the 2010 season, the Big Ten conference opener against Michigan State and the Rose Bowl against TCU. There was a three-way tie for Big Ten title with Wisconsin, Michigan State and Ohio State. The Spartans are the lowest ranked and missed a BSC berth.

This will be the fifth ESPN College Gameday visit to East Lansing and the first since 2005 when the Spartans lost to Penn State.
