FCS Celebrates Educators During Extra Yard for Teachers Week

In September, the College Football Foundation presented Extra Yard for Teachers Week, and our Team Selection Committee helped kick things off! The committee awarded Jones High School Principal Allison Kirby with a $1,000 DonorsChoose gift card.

Prof. Sylvester James Gates, Jr., 1969 Jones High valedictorian and world-renowned theoretical physicist, joined us live from his office at Brown University to present the award and celebrate Principal Kirby’s efforts to promote STEM education. We’re throwing it all the way back to Dec.18, 1982 for the 37th Tangerine Bowl the last year the game went by the name before changing to the Florida Citrus Bowl! In front of a sellout crowd of 51,296, Auburn took home its first bowl victory since 1974 with freshman running back Bo Jackson leading the way with two rushing touchdowns.

Quarterback Randy Campbell, who completed 10-of-16 passes for 177 yards, earned MVP honors while Boston College sophomore quarterback Doug Flutie passed for 299 yards and two touchdowns to earn Offensive Player of the Game honors.

With the 75th anniversary of the inaugural Tangerine Bowl coming up this season, we want to hear from YOU! Click here and share with us your favorite memory from past games!

Our events wouldn’t be possible without the support of our volunteers. With Florida Classic on the horizon and other events just around the corner, we are always in need of individuals to help us put on these bigtime events. If you or someone you know is interested in volunteering at an upcoming event, please sign up below to learn more.
