NFL Joins Effort To Refurbish Lake Lorna Doone Park With Community Grant

Florida Citrus Sports has picked up a new teammate in efforts to redevelop Lake Lorna Doone Park, which sits in the shadow of Camping World Stadium. As part of Pro Bowl Week at the end of January, the National Football League is providing a Pro Bowl Community Grant to FCSports and LIFT Orlando to fund the refurbishment of a multipurpose, multi-sport field within the park. The NFL commitment is a major boost to the plan set in place by Florida Citrus Sports and LIFT Orlando with the help of Jacobs Global Buildings and West Lakes residents.

The West Lakes neighborhood park has no shortage of history behind it, having hosted the first integrated Little League Baseball game south of the Mason-Dixon Line in 1955. In that game, the Orlando Kiwanis hosted the Pensacola JayCees in the Florida State Little League Tournament. The park hosted the Little League state tournament again in 1963 with all nine district championship games taking place at the event.

With the grant providing a brand new field for local athletes, the NFL is doing its part to partner with the surrounding community and leave a legacy in Orlando beyond the Pro Bowl game itself. Additionally, the NFL Foundation will partner with LIFT Orlando and Florida Citrus Sports on this effort to create more areas for the local youth to get active and PLAY 60.

Community representatives, NFL officials, and Pro Bowl “legends captains” will be on site during Pro Bowl Week to reveal details of the project as well as team with the local football teams from Jones and Maynard Evans High Schools for a community tree-planting project at the park.
