East Lake Student Grace Averitt Wins Parade Drawing Contest

Grace Averitt, a fourth grader at East Lake Elementary, has won the 2009 Spherion Orlando Citrus Parade drawing contest, beating out over 300 other entrants.  Grace will ride in the parade on Dec. 30 as an Honorary Grand Marshal.  Her winning design will serve as the cover of the parade program.  Her entry was chosen as part of a Milk & Cookies Reception at the City Hall Rotunda in Downtown Orlando on Wednesday, November 11.

Now in its third year, the drawing contest boasted entries from over 300 children ages 5 to 10 throughout Orange County.  The entries came from over 25 elementary schools throughout Central Florida as well as the Dr. Phillips YMCA afterschool program.  Children were asked to draw their best picture or portrayal of the parade, incorporating aspects of citrus, football and Florida Citrus Sports.  The best 25 entries were judged by local luminaries during the Milk & Cookies Reception and the winner (and four runners-up) were chosen.
