Mexico Takes On Costa Rica At Orlando Citrus Bowl Stadium On June 27

The Mexican National Team, Soccer United Marketing (SUM) and Orlando City SC – in partnership with Orlando Venues, Florida Citrus Sports and Central Florida Sports Commission – announced today that as part of its 2015 U.S. Tour, Mexico will return to the Orlando Citrus Bowl for the first time since the 1994 FIFA World Cup to take on Costa Rica on Saturday, June 27 (6 p.m. ET), in a battle of CONCACAF rivals.

The match will be crucial for both squads as they make final preparations ahead of the CONCACAF Gold Cup – the bi-annual continental championship to be played across North America in July. Capturing the Gold Cup would give the winner a chance to face the United States in a play-in game to qualify for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.

“Part of our ongoing commitment to the community has been to attract global soccer events that drive our local economy, and today we deliver again on that commitment,” said Orlando City Founder and President Phil Rawlins. “This is a clash of two major CONCACAF rivals that we expect will draw thousands of fans to the Orlando Citrus Bowl.“

Mexico and Costa Rica last played on October 13, 2013 with the “Ticos” defeating Mexico 2-1 in a World Cup qualifying match in San Jose, Costa Rica.  In 47 all-time meetings, Mexico’s record against Costa Rica is 26 wins, 15 ties and six losses.

Both nations participated in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, with Mexico advancing to the Round of 16, and Costa Rica having a Cinderella run to the quarterfinals for the first time in the country’s history.

The Orlando Citrus Bowl is the current home of one of Major League Soccer’s newest teams, Orlando City SC, which welcomed a sold-out crowd of more than 62,000 to their first-ever game earlier this month.  Reconstructed in 2014, the historic stadium has hosted several top soccer events, including the 1994 FIFA World Cup, 1996 Summer Olympic soccer and the 1998 MLS All-Star Game.
