Scott Herring Named New FCSports Chief Financial Officer
Scott Herring, a former finance executive with the Orlando Magic and Memphis Grizzlies, has been named Chief Financial Officer at Florida Citrus Sports, the not-for profit membership-based organization that runs the Capital One Bowl and Russell Athletic Bowl.
Herring returns to Central Florida after two-plus seasons with the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies, where he served as the team’s Vice President of Finance. He replaces Dennis Braziel, who joined the FCSports staff in 2007, after serving the organization in various key roles as a member. Braziel, who was named Orlando Business Journal CFO of the Year in 2011, recently married and will be relocating to South Florida.
With the Grizzlies, Herring oversaw all activities in the finance department and led the team’s efforts in strategic planning, financial reporting, and cash forecasting while assisting in basketball operations.
No stranger to Orlando, Herring spent nearly 20 years with the Magic (1988-2008), where he last served as Vice President of Basketball Administration. In that role, Herring was responsible for all day-to-day business and financial matters within basketball operations, as well as the club’s salary cap and player contract issues. He also was involved in the formation of the WNBA’s Orlando Miracle and the IHL’s Orlando Solar Bears.
Herring joined the Magic as Controller in 1988, one year before the team began play as an NBA expansion franchise, and was elevated to Director of Finance in 1994, Senior Director of Finance, IT and Administration in 1997. He was named Assistant General Manager in 1999. In addition to his experience on the professional and collegiate level, Herring previously worked as a CPA in public practice.
Sandwiched between Herring’s stints in the NBA was an experience in college athletics as he served as Associate Athletic Director/Chief Financial Officer at the University of North Dakota’s athletics department. While in Grand Forks, he oversaw all financial operations of athletics, including budget preparation and monitoring, financial projections and analysis, internal and external financial reporting and fiscal policy development and implementation. He also had game management responsibilities for football, men’s basketball, volleyball, soccer and softball.
Herring is a graduate of Grove City (Pa.) College. He and his wife Debbie have three children: Brett, Sean and Kendall
