Selection Committee Recap: Monday November 24

The Florida Citrus Sports Team Selection Committee was present at seven games this weekend as we inch closer to bowl selection.

Florida State remains undefeated after yet another close call, this one coming against Boston College.  The Seminoles’ kicker, Roberto Aguayo, booted a 26-yard field goal in the final seconds of the game to claim a victory and keep their playoff dreams alive.  North Carolina proved its resiliency with an upset win against Duke.  Marquise Williams contributed extensively to the victory, accounting for four touchdowns in the 45-20 win that erased the Blue Devils’ chances at an ACC championship. Notre Dame continues to struggle after its third straight loss, this week’s coming against Louisville.  The Fighting Irish had the chance to send the game to overtime, but Kyle Brindza missed a 32-yard field goal with 51 seconds left in regulation.

Oklahoma’s Samaje Perine was the face of the Big 12 this weekend.  .  The Sooner rushed for 427 yards on 34 carries in the 44-7 win over Kansas, surpassing Melvin Gordon’s FBS single-game rushing record by 19 yards.  In the Big Ten, Ohio State clinched the East division and earned a spot in the conference championship game with its win against Indiana.   Wisconsin’s road win against Iowa and Minnesota’s victory against Nebraska simplified the West division race, leaving the Badgers and Gophers as the last remaining contenders for the West.  We will know which team will be competing against Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship after Minnesota squares off against Wisconsin this coming Saturday.

The SEC featured a major upset when Arkansas shut out Ole Miss, 30-0.  This is the Razorbacks’ second consecutive shut out, after upsetting LSU last week 17-0.  The final weekend of the regular season will focus the spotlight on two games: Alabama vs. Auburn and Mississippi State vs. Ole Miss.  If Alabama loses and Mississippi State wins, the Bulldogs have a shot at the SEC Championship.  If both pull off victories, the argument for two SEC teams in the College Football Playoff will continue through Selection Sunday.

The selection committee will also be out scouting the last week of the college football regular season.  You can see the weekend previews at the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl and the Russell Athletic Bowl sites.
